Sea salt is a very broad term which usually refers to both coarse sea salt and fine sea salt harvested directly from an ocean or sea. In its broader sense, it refers to any salt derived directly from sea water. It’s harvested most often through channeling open ocean water to large clay pots and letting the sun and wind evaporate it naturally over a period of time. The result is a highly refined salt product which can be used for cooking and baking.

Salt is one of the earliest naturally occurring elements. It was mentioned by the ancient Greeks as far back as the third century BC. They used it to prepare their drinks. In India, salt was used for medicinal purposes. Ayurvedic medicine uses it extensively. Modern medical practitioners also recognize it’s medicinal qualities and use a variant of it for treating some forms of cancer and heart disease.

Fine sea salt comes in many different varieties. It’s mostly harvested from beaches on the West Coast of the United States. It has a rich flavor, which is the result of the evaporated sea water and rocks that are washed out to the sea each day. It’s commonly used in savory dishes and various cuisines, which depend on the varying flavors found in the varieties. Some common varieties include Black Sea Salt, Blue Salt, Hawaiian Sea Salt, Organically mined (or Bioperine) Salt and Rock Salt.

As for coarse sea salts, these are mostly harvested from oceans around the world. They’re harvested mainly from areas that have high concentrations of dissolved oxygen. Concentrations of oxygen can be increased by commercial fishing, which involves the capturing of sea animals like lobsters and tuna, which are exposed to the open waters. Then these are frozen and shipped to different places in order to be Harvested.

Irradiated sea salt or fine sea salt comes in various forms. Some varieties come in crystal formations while others come in fine powder. The fine powder varieties are more concentrated compared to the crystal formations and it contains more iodine. However, these too can be harvested from seawater so they too have their own benefits. Irradiated varieties are best suited for use in the manufacture of sea salt as it has a higher content of iodine.

Another variety is the organic varieties. Organic varieties are most commonly known for its use in the production of alternative energy such as solar panels, which is an environmentally friendly and renewable source of energy. It is also used in the manufacture of kitchen salts since it’s a very rich source of potassium and sodium (often referred to as “salt crystals”). Potassium and sodium are essential minerals that are required for the proper functioning of the human body.

The third variety is the kosher salt. Kosher is a term used for the minimum grade of ionic conductivity and sodium. This type of fine sea salt is usually derived from sea animals (Kosher). One of the benefits of kosher salt is that it contains traces of precious minerals (like manganese and magnesium) which are beneficial for our bodies. So, one must know how to identify whether the salt is fine sea salt or a fine kosher salt.

Most people don’t need any additional information on the matter. All they need to know is that sea salt comes in three different grades or varieties based on the minerals and other qualities they contain. Each type of salt on its own can be used for a variety of cooking purposes; however, most people prefer the one from the kosher salt mines because they offer a wide range of dishes to cook. So next time you go shopping for table salt, look for kosher salt flakes.
